A leap into the unknown

Have you ever seen the young teenagers jumping off the rocks and cliff faces into the surging seas?

Watched for that look of sheer terror as they brace themselves for the moment when they take that step into the unknown?

Listened to the high pitch squeal of delight as they flay and wriggle through the air before hitting the swirling maelstrom of green, blue and white water with a thud and a splash?

Then smiled in response to the howls of delight from their peers and the bright-eyed look of relief on the face that is bobbing in the water gasping for air?

So why do they do? Why take the risk? As you get older you forget about the  sheer exhilaration of competing that draws them to the water’s edge.

Here there are no risks just bucket loads of returns as they go in search of more excitement and fabulous reputations.

And that, at much more prosaic level, is why we see so many free iPhone apps and web 2.0 sites being developed. There is no risk and return here. Just the opportunity to build a fabulous reputation. A chance to say to the rest of the world: See what I can do!

So you do it for no other reason than to be seen to be in the game and because above all it’s what you want to be doing with your short time here on earth.
