Internet Myth Number 6: A top page ranking in Google is critical to your web site’s success

Look we have just about done this one to death over the past 18 months here at excapite and I won’t bore you with the details but suffice to say we have found no correlation between a high page ranking on Google and a significant increase in traffic.

The simple rule of thumb is…

If people know about you they will find you on Google. If they don’t know you and they do find you on Google then chances are they’ll over look you in preference for somebody they do know.

As I have said many times before success on Google is more of an annuity for old content than a platform for delivering a sustainable growth in traffic. Having said that the most popular posts on the site continue to be the original experiments in securing a Top 10 Page Ranking on Google.  These posts on the topics of how to make money out of eBooks and iPhone Games have attracted on average between 20-50 hits per week.

At the moment excapite is doing just over 3,500 impression per day with a CTR of 1.45%.

The reason for this of course is because the number of permutations of a key word appearing with a range of word phrases makes it just about mathematically impossible for a copy writer to write a post or even a number of posts that will appear in the top 10 search results of all the various permutations.
